Season launch in the Wollongong Mall

On Friday the 4th of October our long time sponsors Dwyers organised a season launch for us in the Wollongong Mall to coincide with the release of the new VY Commodore. We set up an impressive lifesaving display, sold sausage sandwiches and collected donations for the Rookie program. Thanks to all those who assisted on the day. We are planning a bigger and better launch next year.

The day also saw Lord Mayor Alex Darling presenting us with a cheque for $20,000. This was an agreed amount Wollongong City Council paid to us to enter negotiation of a service agreement between Clubs and Council.

IRB Crewperson Proficiency Towradgi

Sunday the 13th October saw over 90 IRB crewpersons from Illawarra Clubs meet at Towradgi beach to do their in-depth proficiency test to upgrade them to the new IRB Crewpersons award. Many thanks to the examiners who assisted on the day. The picture above shows Don Allan - Patrol Director showing correct crewing position and prelaunch checks. Then it was down to the beach for the practical crewing examination.

All IRB Crewperson Proficiencies have to be completed by the 31st of December.

Radio Monitoring and Recording

Our "Illawarra surf" radio monitoring and recording system has been commissioned and is running well. Any events can now be reviewed by listening to the recordings of the events on any patrol day. It is also helping reduce the improper use of radios on our emergency rescue channel. Shown above is the XRS control interface. A typical radio log from a patrol day is "sandwiched" into a 20min audio file occupying 20 Mb of harddisk space. These files are then being burnt on to CD for long term storage.

Lifesavers honour the Bali victims

On Sunday 20th October lifesavers and beachgoers at Australian beaches showed their respect by holding a minutes silence for the victims of the recent tragedy at Kuta beach in Bali. Shown in the picture above the patrol members on duty at Austinmer Beach remember the lost and others affected by the tragedy. There are Life Savers and family of members from SLSA clubs in the missing.

Building Committee

The Sandon Point clubhouse inspection on the 14th revealed a club with many members but without changeroom facilities for women and young children. Wollongong City Council have $90,000 in their budget to build a Lifeguard tower at Sandon Point but after the inspection and report back to the Surf Liaison Committee Greg Fisher from Wollongong City Council is now thinking it would be better spent upgrading currect lifeguarding facilities in the present building. I am sure club members would agree to that.

The next building committee inspection will be on Mon 28th October and will commence at Woonona at 5.30pm before progressing to Bulli for an inspection.

Scrutineers Course

Fund-raising

For Life Saver Appeal Day on November 9 it has been proven that taking nippers on your doorknock works wonders in maximising your returns. Travel in a group - 2 senior members in yellow patrol shirts and 2 nippers in club caps and club UV vest. When the householders see the smiling faces and outstretched arms of the children holding the money bag they cannot resist giving them wads of hard earned cash.
